# How to Keep Your Dog Active
If you’ve been racking your brain for the best ways to keep your four-legged buddy moving, then you’ve come to the right place. We understand that your dog’s health matters to you, and keeping them active is the best way to prolong their life.
Let’s take a look at the benefits of keeping your dog active and some ways that you can do that in the Tucson area.
## Benefits of Keeping Your Dog Active
There’s no denying that there are plenty of benefits for keeping your hound active. Just like people, dogs need plenty of exercise for their overall health. Regular exercise keeps your dog at a healthy weight and helps them avoid skin issues, diabetes, or arthritis. Not only can these extra health issues impact your pup’s daily life, but they can also be very costly to take care of over the course of their life.
Not only is movement great for your dog physically, but also an excellent way to challenge your pup mentally. You can help your canine avoid boredom and stay out of trouble. Remember, dogs will find something to do if left to their own devices. It’s important to give them a structured activity for safety purposes. Make sure your pooch stays safe and occupied with one of these activities.
## Take A Hike! (With Your Dog)
Hiking is an excellent option for dogs of all breeds and ages. You can tailor hiking to be suitable for the needs of your dogs. Here are a few quick suggestions for dog-friendly trails in the Tucson area:
- **Catalina Canyon Loop Trail**: a moderate hike that has a clear path to follow. The trail runs 2.3 miles and is best used between September and May. Dogs and horses frequent this trail.
- **Black Rock Loop Trail**: considered an easy hike, this trail runs 4.6 miles. This particular trail is popular so expect a fair number of people and dogs along the way.
- **Soldier Trail**: for the more experienced hiker, this trail is about 5.3 miles with some rough terrain that may be the perfect challenge for a physical dog that loves to test its limits.

## Go For A Run
Running is another way to burn off your dog’s energy. Some people enjoy running with their dog, but if that’s not your cup of tea, you can get your pup’s blood flowing in other ways. For example, you could simply take your pooch for a game of fetch. Many dogs instinctively love to run, so you don’t really have to do much to get them going! Some pet owners opt to have their dogs use a treadmill to get a good run. This is a great option for dogs who have some training for using the exercise equipment properly.

## New (or Rotated) Dog-Safe Toys
Toys are another great way to encourage your dog to move. Remember to switch out or introduce new dog toys over time because dogs can get bored with the same old same. Some dogs are satisfied with a squeaker toy or ball, while others may prefer puzzle toys with treats hidden inside. Consider your dog’s personality and physical needs when choosing toys for them to play with.

## K-9 Obstacle Courses
Obstacle courses can be both mentally and physically challenging for dogs. Some dog parks have obstacle courses available, while other people may have dog-friendly obstacle courses placed in their own yard that can be customized based on the needs of your dog.
## Doggy Daycare
Doggy daycare is an excellent option for socializing and making sure your dog stays active. Many dogs use the toys, play with the staff, or simply hang out with other dogs to get their activity in for the day.
