Keeping Your Pooch Happy, Healthy, and Out of the Heat

Written by Julie Grounds | June 5, 2019

This time of year, the rising temperatures can keep both you and your pet indoors more than usual. While you may use this time to binge watch Netflix or finish up those projects you never got around to, don’t forget that your pet is also feeling a little stir crazy. Before you head out, however, it’s important to remember that excessive temperatures can be dangerous for dogs if the necessary precautions aren’t taken when the weather heats up.

Summertime Pet Hazards

As you enjoy those lazy, hazy days of summer, make sure you consider the potential hazards your pet faces this time of year. Some summertime pet hazards to be aware of include:

  • Ear infections, often caused by trapped water after bathing or swimming
  • Heat stroke
  • Sunburns and/or burned paw pads
  • Near drownings
  • Pool chemicals
  • Rattlesnakes bites
  • Bugs, including fleas and ticks
  • Saltwater ingestion

Making Outdoor Time More Comfortable

Outdoor time is good for your pet regardless of the time of year. However, time in the sun isn’t always fun when a large fur coat is involved. To keep your dog active yet cool:

  • Keep him or her hydrated. Make sure you keep water on hand to prevent your dog from getting overheated.
  • Seek shade. When outdoors, find areas that offer up a protective canopy from the sun.
  • Go for an air-conditioned drive. Most dogs love car rides--but rides in the summer are always better when there’s AC blowing.
  • Get wet. Help your dog cool down by spraying him or her with water. You could even let your pooch go for a swim.
  • Avoid the heat of the day. Going out early in the morning or later in the evenings is a good way to allow activity without it being during the hottest part of the day.

When Stuck Indoors, Be Prepared

There will be times it’s just too hot to be outside. For times such as these, it helps to have the right items on hand. Not only will it make you both happier, but it could also your home from the damages that are sometimes caused by restless pups.
